TRANS PYRENEES GRAVEL

Cycling across the Pyrenees
Overview

Trans Pyrenees Gravel is a fully supported coast-to-coast gravel crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, travelling west to east across the Pyrenees.

Starting near Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the French Atlantic coast, the route crosses France, Andorra and Spain before finishing on the Mediterranean side of Catalonia.

This is a long-distance mountain expedition built around quiet roads, gravel sectors, iconic Pyrenean climbs, remote valleys and carefully selected mixed-surface sections where they add to the experience. Beyond the famous roads lies another Pyrenees — hidden valleys, historic mountain tracks, remote plateaus and spectacular viewpoints that most riders never discover. By leaving the main roads behind, Trans Pyrenees Gravel showcases a wild side of the mountains that can only truly be experienced by bike.

With full vehicle support, luggage transfers, mechanical assistance and carefully selected accommodation, riders can focus on the challenge of crossing an entire mountain range under their own power.

Every departure may adapt depending on weather, route conditions and group capability to ensure the safest and most rewarding experience possible.

Tour Schedule

Day 1 — Arrival | Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France

Arrive on the Atlantic coast and settle into the expedition. Build your bike, complete final equipment checks and meet the rest of the group before our welcome dinner and expedition briefing. There is time to explore the town, enjoy the beach or even dip a wheel in the Atlantic Ocean before we begin our crossing of the Pyrenees.

Day 2 — Atlantic Coast to the Basque Mountains

The journey begins at the Atlantic Ocean as we leave the coast behind and head into the rolling landscapes of the French Basque Country. Quiet roads, forested climbs and the first gravel sectors introduce the character of the expedition as we gradually move towards the high mountains of the Pyrenees.

Day 3 — Deep into the Pyrenees

Today the mountains begin to reveal themselves. Remote valleys, long climbs and spectacular mountain scenery define the day as we ride deeper into the heart of the range. Gravel tracks and quiet roads combine to deliver a route that showcases a side of the Pyrenees rarely experienced by traditional road tours.

Day 4 — Legendary Mountains & Hidden Valleys

A challenging stage through some of the most iconic cycling terrain in the Pyrenees. While famous climbs may feature where they add to the experience, the real reward lies beyond the main roads, where hidden valleys, historic mountain routes and breathtaking viewpoints reveal a completely different side of the mountains.

Day 5 — Recovery & Exploration Day

A well-earned recovery day in the heart of the Pyrenees. Relax by the pool, swim in nearby mountain lake, explore the local town or simply enjoy a long lunch and good company with fellow riders. Optional mobility sessions, stretching and sports massage treatments are available to help you recover and prepare for the second half of the crossing.

For riders who simply cannot stay off the bike, an optional short spin is available, featuring a spectacular local climb with panoramic views across the surrounding valleys. However, we strongly recommend using this day to recover, rehydrate and refuel before the final stages of the expedition.

Day 6 — The Wild Central Pyrenees

The expedition continues through some of the most remote terrain of the journey. Long climbs, dramatic landscapes and carefully selected gravel sectors link together a series of valleys and mountain passes as we continue our progress eastwards across the range.

Day 7 — Andorra & The High Pyrenees

Cross into Andorra and experience some of the highest terrain of the expedition. Big mountain scenery, high-altitude roads and spectacular views dominate the day as we ride through one of cycling's most famous mountain nations before returning to the quieter roads beyond.

Day 8 — Catalan Pyrenees

Enter the eastern Pyrenees and discover a landscape of medieval villages, winding mountain roads and remote gravel sectors. The mountains begin to soften, but the adventure continues as we make our way towards the Mediterranean coast.

Day 9 — Mediterranean Finish

The final stage takes us from the mountains to the sea. Rolling terrain gradually replaces the high peaks as we complete our crossing of the Pyrenees and reach the Mediterranean coast. Celebrate the achievement with the traditional finish wheel dip and one final evening together.

Day 10 — Departure

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before packing bikes and beginning your journey home. Transfers, onward travel and post-expedition stories await as the adventure comes to a close.

Additional Info

This is a fully supported point-to-point gravel expedition crossing the Pyrenees from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea through France, Andorra and Spain.

Accommodation, luggage transfers, route support, ride nutrition, feed stops, mechanical assistance and a dedicated support vehicle are included throughout the expedition, allowing riders to focus entirely on the experience.

The route combines quiet mountain roads, remote valleys and carefully selected gravel sectors to showcase a side of the Pyrenees rarely experienced on traditional road tours. Exact routes may vary between departures depending on weather, trail conditions and group ability.

Gravel bikes are recommended, although some riders may prefer an endurance road bike or hardtail mountain bike depending on their goals and riding style. We generally recommend tyres between 40mm and 50mm for the best balance of comfort, grip and efficiency.

Bike rental can be arranged through trusted local partners. Airport transfers are not included, although we are happy to help coordinate shared transfers between participants wherever possible.

For riders travelling with their own bike, we recommend using a cardboard bike box where possible. This simplifies logistics throughout the expedition, as boxes can be recycled at the start and replacement boxes sourced for the return journey at the finish.

For riders travelling with hard case bike boxes or bike bags, we may be able to arrange a dedicated bike box transfer service from Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the finish location. This service is subject to demand, must be booked in advance, and may require a minimum number of participants to operate. We will always aim to keep costs as low as possible, with a target price of approximately €99 per rider where viable.
